As the Host Destination of Journeys Algarve 2026 (14–17 October), the Algarve will welcome leading North American luxury travel advisors for four days of meaningful business connections and immersive destination experiences.

Ahead of the event, we spoke with Hugo Nascimento, Executive Director of Visit Algarve, about the region's evolution into one of Europe's leading luxury destinations, what today's discerning travellers are looking for, and why the Algarve offers so much more than its world-famous coastline.

The Algarve has long been one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. How has it evolved into a leading luxury destination?

The Algarve has evolved naturally from being one of Europe's favourite sun-and-beach destinations into a sophisticated luxury destination by focusing on quality, authenticity and sustainability.

Over the last two decades, we've seen significant investment transform the region through the development of world-class hotels and resorts, Michelin-starred restaurants, award-winning golf courses, luxury villas, marinas and wellness retreats.

At the same time, we've remained true to who we are. Visitors still experience genuine Portuguese hospitality, breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage and a relaxed lifestyle that simply can't be replicated elsewhere.

Today, luxury is no longer defined solely by exclusivity - it's about meaningful experiences, and that's where the Algarve truly stands out.

What do you think today's luxury traveller is looking for, and how is the Algarve meeting those expectations?

Luxury travellers today are looking for authenticity, privacy, personalised service and experiences that create lasting memories. They value space, wellbeing, gastronomy, nature, culture and the opportunity to discover destinations at their own pace.

The Algarve is perfectly positioned to meet those expectations. Visitors can enjoy Michelin-starred dining, private yacht charters, exclusive wine experiences, wellness programmes, championship golf, nature reserves, coastal adventures and authentic inland villages, all within a relatively short distance.

When you combine that with excellent accessibility, year-round sunshine and an exceptionally high standard of hospitality, the Algarve offers a unique balance between sophistication and authenticity.

One of the Algarve's greatest strengths is the diversity of experiences it offers. Beyond its beaches and golf courses, what aspects of the region deserve greater international recognition?

Without question, our gastronomy, wines, cultural heritage, nature and outdoor experiences deserve much greater international recognition.

Visitors can explore traditional fishing communities, historic towns, scenic mountain landscapes, nature parks, cycling and hiking trails, birdwatching, local markets and family-owned wineries. Our culinary scene is also continuing to gain international recognition, combining exceptional local ingredients with contemporary creativity.

What I love most is that visitors can experience centuries-old traditions alongside modern luxury. It means every visit to the Algarve can feel completely different from the last.

The Algarve has successfully extended its appeal beyond the traditional summer season. What role does luxury tourism play in attracting visitors throughout the year?

Luxury tourism has been fundamental in helping us reduce seasonality because luxury travellers are generally more flexible about when they travel. They're motivated by experiences rather than simply by the weather.

The Algarve offers outstanding conditions throughout the year, with mild winters, exceptional golf courses, wellness retreats, gastronomy, wine tourism, nature experiences and world-class facilities for meetings and events.

These experiences provide compelling reasons to visit beyond the summer months while supporting a more sustainable tourism model that benefits local businesses and communities all year round.

Collaboration between destinations and the private sector is essential to delivering exceptional visitor experiences. How does Visit Algarve work with its tourism partners to strengthen the region's luxury offering?

Partnership is at the heart of everything we do.

We work closely with hotels, resorts, DMCs, experience providers, golf courses, wineries, restaurants, municipalities and national tourism organisations to promote the Algarve internationally.

Together, we deliver joint marketing campaigns, trade events, educational programmes, familiarisation trips, media visits and strategic partnerships with leading luxury travel networks and tour operators.

By working together, we're able to present the Algarve as one complete luxury destination, ensuring consistency, quality and long-term competitiveness.

Journeys brings together some of the world's leading luxury travel advisors, suppliers and destination partners. Why do you think the Algarve is the perfect setting for building meaningful relationships within the luxury travel industry?

The Algarve provides an inspiring environment where business and lifestyle naturally come together.

Our accessibility, outstanding hospitality infrastructure and wide variety of luxury experiences create the ideal setting for productive meetings while allowing participants to experience the destination first-hand.

Relationship building is central to the luxury travel industry, and there's no better way to build trust than by experiencing a destination personally. The Algarve allows advisors and suppliers to discover our quality, diversity and authenticity while sharing memorable experiences together.

As the Host Destination of Journeys Algarve, what opportunities do you hope this event will create for the region and the local tourism industry?

Journeys Algarve represents an exceptional opportunity to position the Algarve among the world's leading luxury destinations.

By welcoming influential luxury travel advisors from key international markets, we can showcase the breadth and quality of everything our region has to offer through direct experience.

We hope the event will generate new business opportunities for our tourism partners, strengthen long-term commercial relationships and increase awareness of the Algarve among high-value travellers.

Ultimately, we want participants to leave not only with new business contacts but also with genuine enthusiasm for recommending the Algarve to their clients.

Looking ahead, what is your long-term vision for the Algarve's position within the global luxury travel market?

Our ambition is for the Algarve to be recognised globally as one of Europe's leading year-round luxury destinations, distinguished by quality, authenticity and sustainability.

Rather than pursuing visitor numbers alone, we're focused on attracting discerning travellers who appreciate exceptional experiences, respect local communities and contribute to the destination's long-term prosperity.

We want the Algarve to be known not only for its natural beauty, but also for excellence in hospitality, gastronomy, culture, wellness, outdoor experiences and personalised service.

Finally, if you were introducing someone to the Algarve for the very first time, what is the one experience that would make them fall in love with the region?

I'd encourage them to discover the Algarve from both the sea and the land.

Start with a sunrise or sunset boat trip along our spectacular coastline, exploring the iconic sea caves and dramatic cliffs, before enjoying freshly caught seafood in a traditional seaside village.

Then head inland to discover our rolling hills, vineyards and authentic villages, where you'll experience the warmth of our people and the slower pace of life that defines the Algarve.

It's this combination of extraordinary landscapes, genuine hospitality and authentic experiences that makes people fall in love with the Algarve—and inspires them to return again and again.
